Welcome to our Weber Q120 gas grill review, for everyone looking for a great portable gas grill.
Let’s face it, some of us would take our gas grills to bed if it was at all possible. Sunny days in the backyard, cooking delicious food while the children play quietly in one corner of the garden while the wife is somewhere inside doing her wife thing.
Okay, reality doesn’t always work out like that, but I love gas grilling anyway. Not just in the backyard, but on the road, in the bushes, by the lake, basically anywhere I can take a gas grill. It just adds to that sense of freedom that is part of who I am.
If you’re anything like me, this review is for you. I’ll be discussing the Weber Q120, a light and portable gas grill from the best known grill brand in the world. The Q120 also has a more basic sibling, the Q100. You can read about the differences between the two models on this page.
The first thing you should know is that both these machines are identical in shape and size. There are a few noteworthy extra features on the Q120, which we will get to later.
Weber Q120 Features
You get a 189 square-inch cooking surface, which is large enough to comfortably cook for two to three people. Construction is largely cast aluminum, with the frame being glass reinforced nylon. The grill area itself feature porcelain-enamel coated cast-iron grates.
Since the cooking area is not that big, the single 8,500 BTU stainless steel burner is quite adequate, and spreads enough heat evenly throughout the grill.
An adjustable burner valve helps you control things fairly accurately. You also have a handy electronic ignition which gets you from zero to flame with one push, and a drip pan to make cleaning the grill that little bit easier and less messy.
Handy Side Tables
In a significant upgrade from the Weber Q100, the Q120 features a pair of foldable side tables, complete with tool hooks.
This is a nice convenience to have, and it won’t take you long to really appreciate having these on either side of the grill. A temperature gauge right on the front of the lid helps you keep tabs on what’s happening on the inside.
How’s It Cooking?
The Q120 does a great job of cooking pretty much anything you throw at it. The 8,500 BTU rating may sound low, but not even steaks are a problem with proper preheating.
The only thing you should be aware of is that large whole roasts or birds, such as a turkey, may not fit under the lid.
This is more a steak / burger / hotdog type of grill, which is what most people use for “portable” food when they’re out and about anyway.
Weber Q120 Review: Buyer Comments
Here are some buyer comments from online shopping sites about this model:
“Great grill, very well built”
“The size is perfect for a small family”
“Cooking steaks and burgers on this grill is great. Nice sear marks and great tasting.”
“It took about 9 minutes (1.5 beers) to put together”
“This grill warmed up in 10 minutes, I put a steak on and 12 minutes later had a great steak exactly like I wanted it.”
Final Comments
There are two negatives to this product: it cannot slow cook as they heat stays above 400 degrees, and as mentioned previously large whole birds may not fit under the lid. So, these two issues pretty much go hand in hand.
Apart from that, the Weber Q120 is a great little portable gas grill. It’s not cheap for its size, but with Weber quality counts, and that’s what you get.
